Description:

Oval barred cancel duplex on a 16-dot variant Penny Lilac, with the numeral cancel 946 which according to G. Brumell corresponds to Middlesbrough in Yorkshire. John Parmenter and Ken Smith confirm this and adds that this particular office was in operation from 1845 to 1962, with this particular barred numeral cancel being used from 1845 to 1907 (text via the GBPS).

The stamp itself could be considered to be in fair condition unless one is seeking the numeral postmark. The stamp shows through to the gum quite prominently, but the rear is otherwise quite clean and free of hinging. Excellent example of the 946 cancel if nothing else.
