King George VI
Cat. Value (Adjusted Cat. value adjusted for condition:
A curious stamp since it is a World War II Nazi forgery. We actually have two different version in our possession at the moment (entry #330 & #331), both of which were acquired from Dauwalders of Salisbury. Both have the wave watermark which is clearly non-standard! There are also a few other smaller details too. The crown above King George VI has had the cross replaced with the Star of David and the penny symbol ("D") next to the value has been replace with a crude Hammer and Sickle. Further the flowers to the left and right of the monarch have had their centres replace with a Hammer and Sickle (on the left) and a Star of David (on the right). This particular specimen, a forged 2d, is in good too fine condition. With a large, well preserved left and lower margin with the above details nice and clear and well printed. The horizontal and vertical perforations don’t quite match up which could tell us about the cheapness with which they were produced. The watermark is heavy and visible from both the front and back. It's probably obvious why this was done, but they're fascinating pieces propoganda, and perhaps lesser known then the British forgeries dropped into Germany. That is, those public favourites of a skull superimposed on the Fuhrer's image. More examples are abound all over the world, and they always provoke curiosity.
